People Under The Stairs – Highlighter (Spotify link)

I’ll admit, I’ve been sleeping on these folks for way too long. That all ends with their latest release. Though, if someone described this album to me first I’d definitely have my doubts. Highlights (pun?) of this album include:

-Beats sampling the Family Ties theme song, Under the Bridge by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Smells Like Teen Spirit by The Moog Cookbook.

-References to The Facts of Life, The Simpsons and Minimal Wave Tapes.

-A nearly 3 minute long instrumental psychedelic sunshine meltdown.

-A song containing a smorgasbord of classic hip-hop sample sources.

Sounds whack, right? Instead, PUTS gives what could possible be the best hip-hop album of the year if not the decade. Nap time is over, son.
